Used HDD Rig Buying Guide: How to Choose Enough Pullback Tonnage

Do not choose a used horizontal directional drill from the tonne label alone. We work from bore length, product diameter, ground, tooling and pullback risk, then verify the hydraulic system and complete HDD package before export.

"How much for a 50-tonne XCMG?"

A buyer asked that exact kind of question in the market material. The seller discussed an XCMG 650-class machine and said a normal package could reach more than RMB 800,000. We do not treat the number as a used-market benchmark; the transcript is imperfect and the scope was one seller's explanation. We do take the question seriously, because buyers need to know how much machine their project can justify.

Our answer begins with the crossing, not the tonne label. Fifty tonnes sounds clear, but it does not tell us bore length, product diameter, ground, profile, reaming plan, rods, fluid system or the drag the final pull may develop. Buying HDD by label alone is how a cheap rig becomes the machine watching another contractor finish your crossing.

Describe the crossing before we discuss pullback

Send the pilot length, entry and exit constraints, maximum depth, planned product pipe, finished bore diameter and known geology. Tell us about groundwater, cobbles, soft ground, rock, previous bores and sensitive surface areas. If the information is preliminary, say so. We can work with uncertainty; we cannot protect you from uncertainty that is hidden.

We also ask how you plan to steer, ream, mix and recycle fluid, handle rods and stage the product pipe. The rig is the centre of the operation, not the whole operation. A seller offering only the crawler has not quoted a complete crossing package.

  • Pilot and total drilled length
  • Product-pipe material, outside diameter and pull section
  • Finished bore and proposed reaming stages
  • Geology, groundwater and known obstructions
  • Entry and exit geometry, working space and access
  • Mud mixing, pumping, recycling and water availability

Tonnage needs margin, but a bigger badge is not a design

The rig needs enough thrust and pullback for the planned work, with sensible margin for real ground and execution. We do not publish a magic multiplier from these listing materials. The designer's pull assessment, product pipe, bore profile, reaming method and formation must drive the requirement. Then we compare the machine's documented capability and observed condition.

More labelled tonnage can mean higher purchase, transport and operating burden. Too little can leave the string or product in the ground. We would rather challenge an optimistic plan than sell you confidence. If no pull assessment exists, the responsible answer is to obtain one before locking the machine class.

Torque, rotation and rod setup matter beside pullback

A seller introducing an XCMG XZ430 praised high torque, high rotation and fast operation, then demonstrated rotation, push-pull and clamping. That is the right family of functions to show, but sales adjectives are not measured results. We identify the exact machine and ask for readable specifications and a loaded test.

Rod diameter, length, quantity and thread condition affect the commercial package. Shorter rods may help in confined urban work; longer rods can change handling and transport. One XZ960E listing stated 80 and 102 by 6-metre drill pipe and included a reamer, pilot bit and drive component. We would measure, count and inspect those items rather than assume the caption is accurate.

Mud capacity can stop a powerful rig

Soft ground, unstable formations and large reaming stages make fluid management central. The package source also promotes pipe-replacement and pull-pipe equipment for soft ground, claiming stable drilling and resistance to collapse. We keep that as a creator claim. Your HDD plan still needs the correct mixing, pumping, return and disposal arrangement.

Ask what mud pump, mixer and recycling equipment are included, and test them separately. Confirm connections, hoses and consumables. A rig with impressive pullback but inadequate fluid support can create the very stuck-pipe risk you thought extra tonnage would cure.

The closed-loop hydraulic system deserves a real diagnosis

One maintenance video uses a Dilong 60T to explain weak forward and reverse rotation pressure. The creator described checking charge pressure at 1,500 rpm, expecting about 2.4 MPa and around 0.2 MPa difference during direction changes; below 2 MPa was presented as a fault signal, followed by isolation tests to distinguish pump from system problems. Those figures belong to that diagnostic example, not every HDD rig.

The lesson is more important than the numbers: do not accept 'rotation feels weak' or 'pump is fine.' Use the correct service information and instruments for the exact model, record pressures and temperatures, and isolate the cause. We ask a qualified technician to test thrust-pullback and rotation circuits rather than letting a fresh coat of paint answer a hydraulic question.

Test the rod cycle, not just the engine

Our current-date inspection begins cold, showing full machine, serial and engine plates and hours in one continuous shot. After starting, we watch instruments, smoke, noise and leaks. The undercarriage, tracks, frame, rack, clamps, vise, carriage, anchors, controls and hose routes all get close views.

Warm, the seller demonstrates travel, setup, anchoring, rotation both ways, thrust and pullback, clamp and breakout, and repeated rod loading. We want pressure and temperature behaviour under meaningful resistance where a controlled test is possible. A machine idling in the yard proves that it can idle in the yard. We need the cycle that earns money.

Hours and paint must agree with the wear story

A real XZ960E listing described a 2020 machine with 2,000 working hours. That may be accurate; the post alone cannot prove it. We compare the display with control wear, track gear, rack, clamp jaws, rod loader, pins, hoses and maintenance records. The seller shows the plate and meter in the same continuous video as the machine.

One buyer asked whether an XZ430 had original paint. We understand the instinct, but paint is the cheapest part of the decision. Original paint can help reveal work history; fresh paint can hide it. Neither tells us whether the pump, motors, gearbox and rod handling are healthy. We pay for hydraulic condition and reliable cycles, not shine.

Tools in the photograph are not included until the contract says so

Reamers, pilot heads, transmitters, housings, swivels, subs, rods and mud equipment can change both price and readiness. The XZ960E listing specifically mentioned rods, reamer, guide bit and a drive component. We create a photographed inventory tied to the serial-numbered rig and note condition, dimensions and quantities.

Electronics and locating equipment need compatibility with your existing fleet and local support. We do not assume a shown item works or travels with the machine. If a critical tool is unavailable locally, we build a starter spares and wear package with part numbers and lead times.

The landed cost is larger than the rig quote

Price becomes comparable only after condition and scope are fixed. Market posts advertise 2021 and 2022 450-series rigs, 960 units, larger machines and trade-in services, usually without a usable number. 'Price negotiable' basically means no price has been provided. We request one written quote for one exact machine.

Then we add inspection, repairs, tooling, export preparation, packing, freight, destination charges, customs, unloading and inland delivery. The contract names FOB, CFR or CIF terms and both ports. Invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin follow destination requirements; cleaning, degassing or quarantine responsibility is written down.
